CodeBuddy Code CLI (experimental)

Run Tencent CodeBuddy Code through Happier with ACP sessions, dynamic models, permission modes, resume, execution runs, and experimental image prompts and MCP tools.

Happier runs your locally installed CodeBuddy Code CLI through codebuddy --acp. The ordinary codebuddy command remains the interactive terminal surface. WorkBuddy does not ship a separate ACP command, so Happier has one CodeBuddy agent rather than a separate WorkBuddy agent.

What you need first

Install CodeBuddy Code with the official quickstart:

npm install -g @tencent-ai/codebuddy-code

Then start codebuddy on the machine where Happier runs and sign in with /login. You can instead provide CODEBUDDY_API_KEY in the runtime environment. Accounts on the China or iOA editions also set CODEBUDDY_INTERNET_ENVIRONMENT as described in CodeBuddy's documentation.

Start and resume sessions

happier codebuddy

Happier supports fresh and resumed sessions, cancellation, execution runs, and the models and modes CodeBuddy advertises through ACP. Image prompts and Happier MCP tools are experimental for CodeBuddy. Happier does not copy a static model list.

Happier permission modes map onto CodeBuddy's own modes, and CodeBuddy enforces them:

  • Default keeps your CodeBuddy permission settings.
  • Read Only Mode uses dontAsk: safe actions and anything you pre-approved in CodeBuddy's permission settings run, and everything that would need approval is denied without a prompt.
  • Auto uses auto: CodeBuddy's classifier approves safe actions and denies risky ones.
  • YOLO uses bypassPermissions.
  • Plan Mode uses plan.

An explicit approval mode chosen under Mode takes precedence over this mapping, including after resume. The permission picker shows CodeBuddy's reported mode and explains the override. Choose Use permission setting in Mode to clear the override and use the current mapped permission setting again. Default leaves CodeBuddy's own policy in place. See Session modes.

CodeBuddy does not advertise ACP session listing, so Happier resumes sessions it started but cannot browse sessions created directly in the CodeBuddy terminal.

When it goes wrong

  • Run codebuddy --version in the same environment as the Happier daemon.
  • Reopen codebuddy and run /login to repair sign-in, or verify CODEBUDDY_API_KEY is present.
  • If a model is missing, confirm that CodeBuddy advertises it to ACP for your account.
